Follow Friday: At the Back

Welcome to the first weekly edition of Follow Fridays. I decided to do a Follow Friday for a couple reasons, one: I never click on anyone’s blogrolls, and two: I think my blogroll widget did something to cause my posts to miss their schedules. I also liked the way that both the Lamb and Fog’s Movie Reviews feature other blogs in their own post rather than just an easily overlooked sidebar. Now of course, I couldn’t just steal another idea without adding my own little spin to it, so I decided to carry on my Superhero Shorts idea of interviewing the creators of the blogs I feature, and let them choose the blog to feature for next Friday. And my first pick goes to At The Back.

I first found At the Back after joining the Lamb’s welcoming committee. What that amounts to is that I would check out every new member as it was posted, find an article or two that interested me and leave a comment welcoming them to the Lamb. In some cases I would also follow the blog and/or follow the blogger on Twitter. At the Back, written by Tom Gooderson-A’Court, was started right around the same time as my own blog, reviewed several movies that I was interested in, and was getting similar (slightly higher) traffic as my own site. I liked the varied genres of movies and saw some of my favorites including several Pixar movies, Time Bandits, as well as an Asian Horror movie A Tale of Two Sisters. Odds are, you’ll find a movie that catches your interest as well somewhere in there. Now, let’s see what Tom has to say about a few of my questions.

Bubbawheat: What made you decide to start a movie review blog?

Tom: I’ve always talked passionately about movies and one day my mum said “you should review films” but I said I wouldn’t know how to. A few weeks later I stumbled upon Krilencu’s ‘Whispering to Nobody‘. His writing was funny, informative and knowledgeable but he was just a regular guy like me so I thought I’d give it a go.

BW: How do you decide what movies you watch?

T: I watch a lot so it’s more how do I decide what not to watch. I’ll generally try and see all of the big new releases and try to see as much World Cinema as I can. If I’m persuaded by a trailer then I’ll give it a go too which can often lead to mistakes (Your Highness). My girlfriend also has a lot of input as to what we watch at the cinema and at home.

BW: How often do you watch movies in theatres?

T: On average about twice a week but it depends on what is out that week.

BW: Do you have a preferred genre or style of movies?

T: Not really. I’m not big on rom-coms but City Lights is one of my favourites. I like a good thriller and drama-comedies too.

BW: If someone read only one of your reviews, which one would you want it to be?

T: I don’t know really. I’m quite proud of my Wall-E review but I’ll say Who’s That Knocking at My Door as it’s a recent one and it’s where Scorsese began.

BW: What’s your favourite superhero movie?

T: Probably not a popular choice but I’ll go with Flash Gordon. It’s dated, over the top and as camp as Simon Cowell at a Jazz-tap class but it’s really fun.

BW: And what blog do you suggest that I follow next Friday?

T: I enjoy reading FilmsRruss. He’s got a nice looking blog and is a great reviewer.

  1. Thanks for inviting me to be your first interviewee and I look forward to reading again next week!

    • Thanks! It’s more interesting and interactive than a blogroll, and instead of just promoting the blogs I read, I get sent around to other people’s favorite blogs and am able to find out what makes them so special.
