Special

Special 2006

It’s time once again for me to tackle this month’s obstruction for the 5 Obstructions Blogathon hosted by My Films Views. This month’s obstruction was deceptively simple: write a review that’s more than 1,250 words long, and if you want to go the extra mile write a review that’s over 2,000 words long. I try to average my reviews at about 1,000 words, I personally feel like if they’re much longer than that they are being too wordy and also fewer people want to read overly long reviews. I also thought about using this to go off on a bad movie, which is often easier to write about than a good movie. Instead I decided to take a closer look at a movie fewer people will have seen. I hope you enjoy and also be sure to check out some of the other entries in the blogathon.

Super Buddies

Super Buddies 2013

Since started this site, I’ve expanded my focus quite a bit. For the first half of the first year, I was limiting myself to only theatrically released superhero movies. I quickly included home video releases so I could review the great DC Animation titles and my list of movies to watch is always growing. And while I doubt I’ll ever expand it so much that I end up watching and reviewing Dora the Explorer: Superbabies, I did decide to watch and review this movie. It did help quite a bit that my daughter is already a fan of the Buddies series of movies and I realized that I haven’t really watched a lot of movies with her lately even though I would almost always mention Jena in the early days of this site. Now, this movie has a few things going against it right from the start. It’s a Disney, straight-to-home-video movie, it has talking puppies, and it’s somewhere around tenth in the long running series of Air Bud and later Buddies movies. I’m not going to go out and say that this is a good movie by any means, but when I look at it from the perspective of being aimed towards younger kids, you could do a lot worse than Super Buddies.

Filmwhys #11 The Godfather and Masters of the Universe

I think it will be hard top this one for quite a while because today for the Why Haven’t You Seen This Film Podcast my guest is Joel from the Lamb who asks me the biggest question, why haven’t I seen the Godfather, which is such a well known and well made movie that it really needs no further introduction. And in return I ask him why he hasn’t seen Masters of the Universe. In my defense, I’ve known that Joel has the occasional love of cheesy action movies and while not everyone can enjoy Masters of the Universe, I thought he very well might.

Filmwhys #10 Brokeback Mountain and Megamind

I apologize for the lack of posts recently, I’ve been very busy at work this week and have had other things in the works that I wasn’t able to work on until this weekend. I’ve got a great post coming up in a day or two so keep an eye out. Until then, here’s another great episode of the Why Haven’t You Seen This Film Podcast where my guest is an old friend of mine, Joel who asks me why I haven’t seen Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee’s epic tale of forbidden love between two cowboys in the 60’s. And I ask him why he hasn’t seen Megamind, a great animated comedy that turns the concept of a supervillain on its head.

R.I.P.D.

R.I.P.D. 2013

While I have heard all the generally bad reviews for this movie already, barring a couple, I went into this movie really wanting to like it. I felt like the MIB parallels would be there, but they wouldn’t really bother me. And while I was right about that part, the only problem I had was that the movie as a whole never really stood out as anything special. Not in the action department, the acting, the romance, not even the comedy. It was a generally mediocre movie that I do admit made me chuckle a few times so it’s not all bad. I’m also going to refrain from making any of the obvious play on words from the title of R.I.P.D. so there’s that.

Filmwhys #9 Big Trouble in Little China and Kick-Ass

Welcome back my friends to the show that will probably eventually end, but for now it’s episode #9 of the Why Haven’t You Seen This Film podcast where my guest is Dan Heaton of Public Transportation Snob who asks me why I haven’t seen Big Trouble in Little China, which isn’t a typical classic or modern classic, but it’s a fun cult classic that’s right up my alley. And I ask him why he hadn’t seen Kick-Ass, a fun & violent superhero flick with a sequel coming out very soon.

Follow Friday: Hard Ticket to Home Video

Welcome to another edition of Follow Friday, where each time I feature and interview a fellow blogger and follow their suggestion to another blog to feature next time, which is currently monthly-ish. I prefer this over a blogroll because it gives each blog their own time to shine, plus I personally rarely click on blogrolls so why would I expect you to? Not only that, but I get the chance to check out some great blogs I might not have found otherwise found, talk to some great people, and share the conversation with you. Of course, if you would rather see something like a blogroll, I have collected all of my previous Follow Friday sites in list form which you can find right at the top of the page. Last time I was directed by Isaac from The IPC to check out a site I already enjoy Hard Ticket to Home Video.

Filmwhys #8 Seven Samurai and the Toxic Avenger

Coming right back atcha with episode 8 of the Why Haven’t You Seen This Film podcast where my guest is Nick Jobe of Your Face! who asks me why I haven’t seen Seven Samurai, a great classic film by Japanese master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. And I ask him why he hadn’t seen The Toxic Avenger, one of the more entertaining of Troma Films B-Movies, and the reason why I ended up watching all of the Toxic Avenger movies.

The Toxic Avenger Part III

The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie 1989

After the drop in entertainment quality between the first and second Toxie movie, I didn’t expect very much from The Last Temptation, and aside from a couple minor moments, it follows along the exact same path as Part II. There’s the childlike exposition narration, the usual over the top hammy acting, though another thing I noticed this time around was the horrible pacing. Even though the effects are nothing to write home about, they often linger on them as if they were a multi-million dollar set piece, complete with reaction shots of crowds gasping and screaming as if they’re watching something absolutely horrifying, and while a case could be made for that, they’re often watching something that they should be cheering for in an odd way, rather than screaming in terror over. I’m hoping that what I’ve heard holds true and the final installment brings it back up a notch, if not in actual movie quality, at least in entertainment value, which as fans of bad movies know are not always the same thing.

Filmwhys #4: The Deer Hunter and Super

I’m back again on my journey to fill my large gaps in movie watching. In this episode of Filmwhys, or the why haven’t you seen this film podcast, my guest is Stefan Gagne, a web author who writes at StefanGagne.com who asks me why I haven’t seen one of Robert DeNiro’s early works The Deer Hunter. And in return, I ask him why he hasn’t seen James Gunn’s Super.
