Filmwhys #10 Brokeback Mountain and Megamind
I apologize for the lack of posts recently, I’ve been very busy at work this week and have had other things in the works that I wasn’t able to work on until this weekend. I’ve got a great post coming up in a day or two so keep an eye out. Until then, here’s another great episode of the Why Haven’t You Seen This Film Podcast where my guest is an old friend of mine, Joel who asks me why I haven’t seen Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee’s epic tale of forbidden love between two cowboys in the 60’s. And I ask him why he hasn’t seen Megamind, a great animated comedy that turns the concept of a supervillain on its head.

R.I.P.D.
R.I.P.D. 2013
While I have heard all the generally bad reviews for this movie already, barring a couple, I went into this movie really wanting to like it. I felt like the MIB parallels would be there, but they wouldn’t really bother me. And while I was right about that part, the only problem I had was that the movie as a whole never really stood out as anything special. Not in the action department, the acting, the romance, not even the comedy. It was a generally mediocre movie that I do admit made me chuckle a few times so it’s not all bad. I’m also going to refrain from making any of the obvious play on words from the title of R.I.P.D. so there’s that.

Filmwhys #9 Big Trouble in Little China and Kick-Ass
Welcome back my friends to the show that will probably eventually end, but for now it’s episode #9 of the Why Haven’t You Seen This Film podcast where my guest is Dan Heaton of Public Transportation Snob who asks me why I haven’t seen Big Trouble in Little China, which isn’t a typical classic or modern classic, but it’s a fun cult classic that’s right up my alley. And I ask him why he hadn’t seen Kick-Ass, a fun & violent superhero flick with a sequel coming out very soon.

Follow Friday: Hard Ticket to Home Video
Welcome to another edition of Follow Friday, where each time I feature and interview a fellow blogger and follow their suggestion to another blog to feature next time, which is currently monthly-ish. I prefer this over a blogroll because it gives each blog their own time to shine, plus I personally rarely click on blogrolls so why would I expect you to? Not only that, but I get the chance to check out some great blogs I might not have found otherwise found, talk to some great people, and share the conversation with you. Of course, if you would rather see something like a blogroll, I have collected all of my previous Follow Friday sites in list form which you can find right at the top of the page. Last time I was directed by Isaac from The IPC to check out a site I already enjoy Hard Ticket to Home Video.

Filmwhys #8 Seven Samurai and the Toxic Avenger
Coming right back atcha with episode 8 of the Why Haven’t You Seen This Film podcast where my guest is Nick Jobe of Your Face! who asks me why I haven’t seen Seven Samurai, a great classic film by Japanese master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. And I ask him why he hadn’t seen The Toxic Avenger, one of the more entertaining of Troma Films B-Movies, and the reason why I ended up watching all of the Toxic Avenger movies.

The Toxic Avenger Part III
The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie 1989
After the drop in entertainment quality between the first and second Toxie movie, I didn’t expect very much from The Last Temptation, and aside from a couple minor moments, it follows along the exact same path as Part II. There’s the childlike exposition narration, the usual over the top hammy acting, though another thing I noticed this time around was the horrible pacing. Even though the effects are nothing to write home about, they often linger on them as if they were a multi-million dollar set piece, complete with reaction shots of crowds gasping and screaming as if they’re watching something absolutely horrifying, and while a case could be made for that, they’re often watching something that they should be cheering for in an odd way, rather than screaming in terror over. I’m hoping that what I’ve heard holds true and the final installment brings it back up a notch, if not in actual movie quality, at least in entertainment value, which as fans of bad movies know are not always the same thing.

Filmwhys #4: The Deer Hunter and Super
I’m back again on my journey to fill my large gaps in movie watching. In this episode of Filmwhys, or the why haven’t you seen this film podcast, my guest is Stefan Gagne, a web author who writes at StefanGagne.com who asks me why I haven’t seen one of Robert DeNiro’s early works The Deer Hunter. And in return, I ask him why he hasn’t seen James Gunn’s Super.

Superman Doomsday
Superman Doomsday 2007
This was advertised as the first animated Superman movie rated PG-13 and was really the start of the DC Animation boom that’s continued to this day. Before this, most of the movies released were drawn from the various animated series like Batman, Batman Beyond, and The Adventures of Superman. This one was based on one of the most popular comic books of all time, the Death of Superman, though there were many significant changes to the story. I was actually vaguely familiar with the Death of Superman story because one of my friends bought into the whole craze at the time so I read through the first issue shortly after it first came out. When this movie came out, I had heard that there was a brief cameo by Kevin Smith which referred to the giant mechanical spider he was asked to include during his work on the Superman Lives script. In the end, it turned out pretty well, though I do think it is one of the weaker animated projects, likely due to the fact that it was one of the earlier ones.

Justice League: Doom
Justice League: Doom 2012
I figured it was time for me to take another trip into the animated DC Universe, this time it’s Justice League: Doom. It still surprises me how many of these things are out there and how many I still have yet to see. This movie is centered around a plot to destroy the entire Justice League using stolen plans initially created by Batman but altered by the Legion of Doom. Of course, this isn’t the LoD from the old Superfriends cartoon, though their base does emerge from a body of water during it’s initial reveal. The members of the LoD are very different, but I’ll get to that in a little bit. The action is up to the usual par, including the level of peril. The first thing I noticed with this movie was also that it included the voicework of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Tim Daly as Superman who really solidified their roles as those two during the 90’s animated series and various other works in the interim.

Filmwhys #2: Sunset Blvd. & The Rocketeer
I’m back with another episode of Filmwhys, aka the why haven’t you seen this film podcast. In this episode, Aurora from Once Upon A Screen asks me why haven’t I seen Sunset Boulevard, a 1950 classic directed by the great Billy Wilder. And in return, I asked her why she hasn’t seen the classic-feeling superhero movie The Rocketeer. What did we think of the movies? You’ll just have to listen to find out.
