Every Superhero and Comic Book Movie in Chronological Order

Here at Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights, my goal is to seek out and watch every superhero and comic book based movie out there, this is my attempt at creating a comprehensive list of every single one I can find as well as the ones coming out in the near future. Aside from the traditional theatrical releases, I’m also including: Straight-to-Video releases including low budget knock-off films, TV movies including feature-length stand alone pilots, foreign films & anime movies. I’m currently excluding: movie serials, TV series, short films, anime OVAs, and documentaries created as home video bonus content. I’m also excluding fan films, though I have featured many on this site alongside interviews with the creators in my Superhero Shorts series. Links go to my review of the movie here on this site, and I welcome comments, suggestions, and any movies that I may have missed.

All Superhero TV Series By Date

Criteria

Comic Book Film

  • The main character(s) has its origins in a comic book, graphic novel, or serialized comic strip published in the US or Europe.
  • The film’s specific story, production design, and/or interpretation of the characters were based on a specific comic book or graphic novel. Ex. 300, Hercules (2014)
  • The character(s) did not originate in: novels, non-serialized comic strips, Japanese Manga, mythology or folklore. Though it could still count as a superhero movie (see below).
  • The story is set in the real world and has a heavy focus on comic books, comic book culture, or comic book characters i.e. documentaries.

Superhero Film

The film contains several of these factors:

  1. The protagonist originated in a comic book or graphic novel.
  2. The hero has powers, abilities, or gadgets beyond normal human capabilities, i.e. superpowers.
  3. The hero wears a costume and/or has a hero identity that is separate from his regular identity. Ex. Batman/Bruce Wayne
  4. The film takes place in the modern day or the near future. Ex. Judge Dredd.
  5. The hero and/or villain are very theatrical in their heroics and/or crimes.

U – Unreleased titles
[Country] – Foreign titles

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 2 – A
Madame Web

  1. If you need a replacement at any point, you could do a lot worse than Green Lantern: First Flight. The animated flick from 2011. It starts off similar to the live action version with the origin story, but I think it’s actually a lot better

    • I have actually seen that one, but not Emerald Knights yet. Really enjoyed First Flight. The Warner Premier DC animated movies have all been pretty great and they are top on my list for any subs or after I finish these. There’s just so many of them it’s hard to narrow them down.

  2. If you want to throw in another comedy you can’t go wrong with Orgazmo. A porn star superhero…definitely nothing else like it! Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the South Park guys. Wildly inappropriate, but it’s impossible to not laugh out loud!

    • I remember wanting to watch that when it first came out but never got around to it. Definitely a unique addition to the list, but I think it pretty much fits all the criteria I have for this first year. Thanks for the suggestion.

  3. One more, as it turns out. This one just went up on Hulu; two versions, I’m guessing subbed and dubbed.

City Under Siege (Chun sing gai bei) (2010)
    http://http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1691832/

  4. Greetings! I looked up this page because I wanted to watch a super hero themed movie as I have been binging on super hero movies lately and I wanted to see a list to refer to. I’m happy for seeing titles of movies I haven’t seen (even though as a bit of a movie buff I’m slightly ashamed as to having not seen them yet) and I’m looking forward to rewatching some movies I had forgotten. Two titles stuck out in mind for adding to your super hero movie list: The Phantom 1996 with Billy Zane and Orgazmo 1997 with Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Thanks for your write up. Cheers!

    • I do have them on my list already and hope to get around to them soon. Thanks for stopping by! As for not having seen all of them, there are quite a few obscure and lesser known movies alongside the more well known ones so don’t feel too bad for not having seen them all!

  5. This is quite a list. I’ve probably seen half of them myself, mostly the newer and more popular ones. Think I’ll bookmark this page and maybe start watching the ones I haven’t seen from the beginning. Would be nice to say that we’ve seen most if not all of every superhero/comic book movie. Although right now I’m watching all the Disney/Pixar movies in order, so this quest will have to wait until afterwards. ^^

    • At the rate that I’m watching them and how many more are coming out each month, it’ll probably be at least two years if not more before I can claim to have seen them all. It’s been a fun project so far though. The Disney/Pixar movies are a great project too and there’s a few of those I haven’t caught yet, good luck on both fronts and thanks for stopping by!

  6. Please check out my 2013 feature film, Squid Man. It tells the story of a down-on-his-luck second-rate superhero (he can shoot ink out of his fingers) struggling to get by, in a unique combination of comedy, sincerity, and general weirdness. You can watch it for free with an Amazon Prime account: http://www.amazon.com/Squid-Man-Andrew-Roth/dp/B00J69SO7W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406125938&sr=8-1&keywords=squid+man

    • Thanks for finding your way here! I will definitely add this movie to the list soon and while I don’t have Amazon Prime there is a 30 day trial I will make use of at some point in the near future.

  7. ITALIAN superhero movies

Lucky The Inscrutable (1967) Starblack (1966)
Ok thats all I have for Italian

      • Yeah, I include comic book adaptations, I just did a very brief check and didn’t see anything on Yor, and the one thing I glanced at for Tex said that it was based on a comic strip, not a comic book. And I exclude the comic strips or else I would also want to include the Addams Family, Garfield, Peanuts and the like. I’ll look more into it though.

    • Thanks! I got all the Italian ones so far, some I excluded because I think they’re a bit of a stretch and I couldn’t tell if they were based on a comic book.

      • Yor and tex are both based on comics. Are you looking for just superhero movies or movies based on comics as well? Yor the Hunter is based on a comic called henga Google henga comic in Google images as well tex to see comic covers

  8. Ok some random Asian Non-toku superhero movies here:
    Salvage mice (2011)-Japan

The must see movie out of the bunch is k20

  9. Doctor Mordrid – 1992… ok this one maybe a bit of a stretch without the story behind it, may still be a stretch with the story but it is part of my collection.
*from Wikipedia* : It was produced by Charles Band and co-directed by Band and his father, Albert Band. It was written by C. Courtney Joyner and released by Full Moon Features.
The younger Band held an option for an adaptation of the Marvel Comics character Doctor Strange, but the option expired before production could begin.[1] Instead of scrapping the project, the script was rewritten to include original characters not directly adapted from the comics property.[1] The main character originally was to be called “Doctor Mortalis”. Some early concept art was done by Jack Kirby.

  10. Dollman (1991)
    Dollman vs. Demonic Toys (1993)
*A Dollman comic book was published by Eternity Comics
Ben 10: Race Against Time (2007)
    Ben 10: Alien Swarm (2009)
*note these are the made for TV live action movies.
    Sgt. Kabukiman (1991)
*note I may have missed this one on your page but I didnt see it on the by date but I just read your citizen toxie review so I know you know this character.

    • I do know about Kabukiman, but I didn’t know enough about him to know if he was more like a superhero or more like a weird martial arts/cop movie.

      • Yeah id say its a superhero film. They even parody the I’m Batman scene with im kabukiman… As well Wikipedia has it listed as a superhero movie. And you should read the production tab on the wiki, about how the movie came about. The story is better then the movie.

  11. Supersonic man (1979)-Spanish/Italian
*note this movie is so bad its good look up the trailer on youtube

    Mirageman (2007)-Chile

*rest of this group should all be from the USA*
    Monarch of the moon (2006)
    The Dead one (2007)
    * both of these dvds come with a mini comic. Monarch is an original story but dead one is based on El Muerto: The Aztec Zombie comic book.

    Superguy (2000)
*note I thought I saw this on your list but I cant find it now. Its a mockumentary

    Hero Tomorrow(2007)
    Dark justice (2000)
    Archives of the fantastic (2009)
    Atomic nine (2007)
    Suburban Commmando (1991)
    * note Suburban commando might not fit on your list but it seems he has Superhuman strength also Doc Brown puts on his armor and tries to fight crime

**out of these movie my favorites are Mirageman and Hero tomorrow

    • If Superguy isn’t on the list it should be as I actually own that one on DVD. And thanks again for all the additions though it’ll take me a while to get around to all of them.

    • Ps dark justice is also know as yup yup man… when I looked up its date I kept finding the tv show dark justice a yup yup man search will get better results

  12. nice list but theres an astroboy live action from japan

  13. Hey hope you had a good holiday. Still have a lot to add but trying to give you a little time to update first. But I was looking around and noticed there is no love for Zorro?

    • I’ve considered it, but he doesn’t fit enough of my criteria, similarly to Conan. He originated in novels, it’s set in the past, not the modern age or near future, and he doesn’t have any super powers. There may be come comics out there, but his start was in novels. I should be doing an update pass here today hopefully.

      • it’s interesting how similar and how different our collections are for example I have no cartoons in my collection. But I have both Zorro and John Carter in my collection which were both novels. I as well do not think of conan a comic hero Slash and or superhero and those movies are not part of my collection

      • I meant to review John Carter under my “Almost Super” tag when I watched it, but never got around to it. Also, when I updated the list this time around I also updated the intro paragraph with the specific criteria I try to look at when deciding whether or not to include something in this list.

  14. Toku-heros & Henshin Heros… ok so you can get really lost in the henshin hero sub category of super hero movies… As in I could add 40 some movies and you may not know where to start. So I will just Add some must haves and if you really like it I will add more

    • You already have two must haves on your list guyver 2 dark hero and the 1st zebraman

    • Garo red requiem 2010 jp
      Kamen rider shin 1992 jp
      Kamen rider next 2007 jp
      Mechanical Violator Hakaider 1995 jp
      Ultraman the next 2004 jp
      Karate-Robo Zaborgar 2011 jp
Masked rider the first 2005 jp
Space Sheriff Gavan: The Movie 2012
      Kikaider Reboot 2014 jp
      Specter 2005 jp

  15. any thoughts on a Green Arrow movie?…I mean if Flash is up there, and in Flash and Arrow keep alluding to more JLA characters being introduced, do you think JLA part 1 is where they’re leading up to on TV?

    • Unfortunately, DC is keeping the TV universe and movie universe separate. Grant Gustin is not playing the theatrical Flash, instead it will be Ezra Miller from Perks of Being a Wallflower.

  16. Carl Freewalt

you forgot about Superman/Shazam: The return of black adam. Pretty good.

    • I believe it’s the only DC Showcase short I haven’t seen yet, but that’s just it. It’s a short at only 25 minutes. That’s why I don’t include it. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!

  17. I picked up a new movie last night at Wal-Mart it’s called beyond the mask

    • I saw that there as well, but it looked a bit too much Victorian era. I decided that unless there’s super powers & other typical superhero trappings, I don’t count masked heroes pre-1900 as “superheroes”, which includes Zorro.

      • I picked it up I’ll keep you posted if there is any super powers in the movie but I don’t think it will go there. Also Antboy 2: Revenge of the Red Fury dvds are in red box machines.
Also picked up “black lighting” it seems like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang meets iron man. I wasn’t sure if I would have called it a superhero movie but the wiki page says superhero several times so we’ll see

      • Black Lightning also borrows heavily from Spider-Man. Thanks for the heads up on Antboy 2, I’ll look out for it.

      • Where is Red Sonja (1985)? I know she is partly based in the world of Conan but unlike Conan she was created in 1973 at Marvel.

Also I appreciate this list. I’m working on something similar but with a focus on what characters have appeared on screen. This is a useful tool

      • Weird, I reviewed it early on in this site but apparently it was when I was focusing on just superhero movies and not comic book movies. I’ve got the more recent animated one on this list and that one has a review I just need to add the link on this page. Will fix soon.

  18. I’m trying to remember a 90s superhero-ish movie. Maybe someone can help.
It’s set in the 30s or 40s. The backgrounds were always dark and foggy and most of the bad guys worked for the real bad guy.
They also had facial prosthetics to accentuate their features. Very similar to what you would see in comic books.
    Thanks for any help.

    • The first thing that comes to mind is 1990’s Dick Tracy, though it was set closer to the 20’s and there were a lot of bright costumes. Everyone did wear prosthetics though. Another possibility would be Mystery Men, or the Guyver though the Guyver was full creature make up, not just facial prosthetics.

  19. Dick Tracy is what made me remember it. Extremely similar. The bad guys drove around in a van and everything was foggy.

  20. Not a complaint but you missed pilot movies

    • In general, I purposely exclude pilot movies for various reasons. Most I just consider double-length pilot episodes of TV, some are too short like Power Pack’s 30 min runtime. In general, I include them if they are: feature length (over 60 mins), did not go to series (Dr. Strange), or were repackaged/edited as a home video movie (Blade: House of Cthon)

  21. 2016 movies also include flying jatt and henchman

    • Thanks for the heads up, Henchmen looks very interesting. I will add them to the list during the next update.

      • Why u don’t give star wars and star trek in this list because they r also comic book movies

      • They were made into comic books, but Star Wars came out just a month before the movie and was based on the movie, not the other way around. Also Star Trek’s comic came out after the TV series. I only include movies where the comic came first with just a few exceptions.

      • And also flying jatt is the superhero movie.see it in wikipidea.

  22. In 2017′ kingsman the secret service 2 ‘ is releasing.

  23. R u on twitter also

  24. Ex machina is also a comic book movie

  25. Can u please follow me on twitter on @divyans111. Then we share our views about upcoming comic book movies because i m also a biggest comic book geek.

  26. In 2017 bloodshot and power rangers is releasing.

  27. Why u don’t take names of movies like dragon ball z ressurection ‘F’ and transformers age of extinction.also minions as supervillains movie.

    • Partly to keep the list a little more manageable, I would like to finish it at some point. Both are a little over the edge of sci-fi, plus there are a ton of Dragonball movies I think.

  28. And what about jupiter ascending and lucy.and TBD movie bananaman .u also have to notice on bloodshot as a best comic book movies .and also power rangers as a new flick in 2017.

    • I think Jupiter Ascending is too much sci-fi and Lucy is more sci-fi action though it’s a close one. Bananaman was supposed to come out last year and there’s been nothing but a website for over a year so it sounds like it could be dead in the water. I will add Bloodshot & Power Rangers the next time I update this list.

  29. avengers 2 u still don’t see it.but i liked ur whole movies list.it is an amazing list.i haven’t seen this type of list in my life.great job dude.

    • Thanks, and I appreciate the input & suggestions even if I don’t update this list quite as often as I used to. And I have seen Avengers 2, I just need to re-watch it so I can write about it.

  30. Can I ask u something please ,in one newspaper I read that expandable 3 is a superhero movie because of its stunt in it,but I don’t think it is a superhero movie.can u answer me that it is a superhero movie or not please.

    • Articles often try to throw the term “superhero movie” around since they’re popular lately. I haven’t seen the latter 2, but the Expendables is just a straight up action movie. They may be able to do some crazy things, but that’s not enough to call them superheroes. Same with the later Fast and the Furious movies.

  31. in 2016 rachet and clank is coming.see its trailer on youtube.

  32. cool page! im serching for such kind of movies since i was a child. you have broad a lot of them together. but I still missing some in your list what about the Old shadow movies first was 1933 if I am right. I also miss Nightman and the Cape.
    gretings from germany!

    • Welcome! I’m always looking to add movies to the list. I thought the old Shadow movies were just serials, but apparently there’s a bunch. I’ve heard of Nightman but keep forgetting to add it, but the Cape was just a TV show as far as i know.

  33. I don´t think so Cape must be relatet to marvel somehow -about the Circus that picked him up- one time the call them self “circus of crime” thre is a groop at marvel comics that called so too. if i have seen all epis.I can say more. at the moment is just suspicion.

  34. Divyansh yadav

2017 also included ghost in the shell, power rangers and kingsman the golden circle.ghost in the shell is a manga.and in 2016 batman mech vs mutant is coming.

  35. I can’t help but notice that The Scarlet Pimpernel and Zorro, two of the earliest costumed superheroes, are missing from this list.

    • I specifically left them out, I agree that they were a stepping stone to modern superheroes, but there are enough differences that I don’t quite consider them superheroes. I did watch the modern Zorro movie recently and plan to watch at least a couple more before writing about Zorro as a whole with more specific thoughts on the subject. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it!

    • Scarlet Pimpernel did not wear a costume. I swear I think allot of people never read it but just watched that Daffy Duck cartoon, which was a as much a Zorro pastiche, and think the Pimpernel must have wore a costume too? When he wore disguises – a gypsy – old lady – soldier etc- There was no identifiable masked Pimpernel persona like there is Zorro and later Superheroes Superman, Batman, etc.

That said as per the authors criteria, and other choices; Zorro should be on this list, definitely a bizarre bias there.

  36. Scott S. aka EYEHDM

Zashchitniki 2017 aka Guardians (in UK and US) Russia’s version of the Avengers including a bear with a machine gun. My friend sent me a link to the trailer it looks pretty good so far. It may get a US English dubbed release… maybe?

  37. Scott S. aka EYEHDM

Ant boy 3 is out on DVD

  38. The list has missed an indian tamil movie released on 2012 mugamoodi. The movie is much better than the indian movies listed here with lot more realistic stunts and effects. But, strongly inspired from christopher nolan’s dark knight rises(2008)…

  39. Divyansh yadav

    u missed 2016 max steel 14 oct

  40. 2017 included DreamWorks animated movie Captain Underpants.

  41. Harbinger is planned as first movie in Valiant Comics film universe now and it will be released before Bloodshot.

  42. Some more graphic novel movies for 2017:
    1.codest city.
2.bad kids of Crestview academy .
    3.i kill giants .
    4.accident man.
5.valerian and the city of a thousand planets.
Please join these graphic novel movies to your list.

    • Thanks for the help, I apparently also missed Bad Kids from Hell which is the first movie and Crestview Academy is the second. I forgot to add Captain Underpants though, will get it next time around.

  43. Hey it’s good that you have completed your 2016 movies list, but you still missed two of the movies first is ‘abattoir’ and second is ‘sinister squad’ In 2016 movies lineup.

    • Thanks, I hadn’t heard about Abattoir yet, will definitely check that one out. I did watch & review Sinister Squad, but thought it was more fantasy/horror and not enough superhero so it didn’t make the list. I didn’t know enough about Ninjago, but thought it was like ninja superheroes. I will keep an eye on it and take it off the list if I think it doesn’t fit.

  44. Hey also I have a question that why you put ‘lego Ninjago movie ‘ in your list .It is not a superhero movie dude.

  45. I m giving u a current updated list of 2018:-
    1.Black Panther- 10 Feb.
    2.Pacific Rim: uprising- 23 Feb.

  46. And Lego movie sequel is set to release in 2019.

  47. divyansh yadav

    Did u watched Abbatoir

  48. Ulysses Gamma-Hose

Bubbawheat, I love this site and your enthusiam for the genre. Please check out my site, Superhero Cinema..

    https://superherocinemaweb.wordpress.com

  49. I just checked Wikipedia (I know, I’m lazy; it’s a failing) and according to them only 3 superhero movies have been made in Russia. I just can’t believe that’s true. I know they got a little behind during the Cold War, but supposedly the first Russian superhero movie came out in 2009! Can’t be true. I’d love to know what you might add to that list. I’d vouch for “August Eighth” even though the superhero is imaginary. But there has got to be more than three!

    • I’m not exactly an expert in Russian cinema and only know of two off the top of my head. Black Lightning and the Guardians. I’d probably head to Wikipedia first myself, but I’ll keep an eye out.

  50. Hi, can anyone remember a superhero film from the eighties where the hero’s powers fail when he sees the colour yellow?

  51. good list … you are missing vixen 2017 animated
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6945882/

  52. Scott S aka EYEHDM

Bubba wheat I have a pretty big update for you I found three movies missing from your list

    * Alien Arsenal 1999 made-for-tv movie (It’s by full moon entertainment it’s pretty low budget its name and DVD cover do not make it seem like a superhero movie but two teenage kids find alien battle suits they mostly just use it to scare the bullies straight but they do stop a heist and they talk about being superheroes)

    * Allegiance of Powers (2016)  low budget I haven’t seen it yet but its a post apocalypse superhero movie

    * They call me Jeeg (2015 Italy 2017 US)

I think this one is great one of the best foreign superheroes films I’ve seen in awhile it’s on Netflix right now

  53. Some new 2017 movies like project ghazi a Pakistani superhero movie ,rendel a Finnish superhero movie.

  54. Bubba I’ve got two movies for your list first is iboy a Netflix movie based on a book of the same name and second is a movie called Armstrong AKA iron arm in some areas. As well i’d like to help support you some how some way. I do own over 350 superhero movie dvds. If you’re not a collector and you just want to watch the movies I can rip and burn some DVRs for you. I’ve been trying to think of ways to share my collection and knowledge of superhero movies with others. I’ve started a letterboxd profile to Chronicle my collection also thinking of doing my own blog or vlog (maybe youtube) any suggestions?

    https://letterboxd.com/EYEHDM/

  55. The Russian movie Guardians is at Walmart now Amazon still has it listed as coming out in December.

  56. Nice list. How about 1990 The Flash series. It’s quite charming and the cast has turned up in the current CW Flash…

  57. Nice one bro…

  58. The steam engines of oz 2018.Based on the comic book of same name.

    • Oh yeah, I knew about that but haven’t added it. The same studio did the Howard Lovecraft movies. Pixies and Clockwork Girl are two others by them I haven’t added yet.

      • Where are you in 2018 I’m eagerly waiting for u.Now u have come so I have to ask u that from where I can download ‘surge of power revenge of the sequel’ movie. And henchmen released in 2018 and I had watched it , it is available on the internet.

      • I’m almost done catching up with 2017 releases, then I’ll start working on more 2018 ones. I hadn’t seen anything about Henchmen being officially released by the studio yet, but it may have leaked. I saw Surge through an official screener copy but you can check the official site surgeofpower.org for more info.

  59. Did u know something about abattoir sequel the dwelling.I want to know that it is released yet or not.

  60. I have some movies for u that u can add in your 2018 list. They are:-avengers of justice: farce wars,Scooby Doo and Batman brave and the bold, aadamkhor,Lego black panther trouble in wakanda, avengers Grimm time wars,Bhavesh Joshi superhero, marvel rising secret warriors, the darkest minds, the late batsby, freedom fighters the ray and henchman (absolutely released in 2018 u can see trailer on YouTube).

  61. Where are all the Zorro movies?

    • While Zorro does have a secret identity, I feel like that’s really the only connection to superheroes he has and is more of a masked vigilante. A subtle difference and I wouldn’t argue too hard if someone else calls him a superhero, but I don’t.

  62. The Flash TV show 1990-1991?

  63. I’m pretty sure I remember an Archie Comics movie or 2, but I didn’t see any here

    • You’re correct, there’s actually several. Both animated and live action. I didn’t initially include them because I thought of Archie as a comic strip instead of a comic book. They will be added hopefully the next time I get around to adding another chunk.

  64. I’ve decided as about 60% of the average day I’ve got nothing more important to do, I’m determined to watch every english language movie on this list. Not the foreign ones because the dubs always ruin it and I hate having to read subtitles for more than a few minutes and not documentaries just because documentaries suck as a genre

  65. I think the Matrix trilogy counts as superhero movies because Neo has superpowers and he uses them to save humanity

    • Thanks for the comments and good luck in your project. I agree that the Matrix is very close to the line. The biggest factor for me is that it takes place far into the future and feels more like a sci-fi hero movie than a superhero movie to me. But I wouldn’t argue too hard if others consider Neo a superhero.

  66. I don’t think The Shadow movies should count because the character was originally from radio dramas before he was in comic books. If The Shadow still counts after that, than Alien Vs Predator has to count to (those aren’t really based on movies, they’re based on comics that are based on movies)

    • Yes, the Shadow is another close to the line character. The Alec Baldwin movie is very much a superhero movie even if it’s not a comic book movie. The superhero connection and the fact that there were comics at all are both contributing factors why all the Shadow movies are included.

  67. Netflix put out on xmas We can be heroes a pseudo sequel to A Sharkboy and Lavagirl

  68. Does anyone know about cat woman?

  69. Awesome stuff man!
I noticed you don’t have the watchmen tv show listed as well as the boys and Matt Reeves batman.

    • You’re right, this list is movies only. I have a TV series list over at my other site Channel: Superhero but that list is a few years out of date so it won’t have the newer series on there. Maybe I’ll get back to updating that one but my focus right now is this site.

Thanks for stopping in, I appreciate it!

  70. As well as the DC live action tv stuff. Titans, arrow, the flash.

  71. Superman:
Jerry Siegel – “I loved The Mark of Zorro, and I’m sure that had some influence on me.” …”When writing the script, I had Douglass Fairbanks very much in mind in the athletic stunts that he did too, so the influence of Douglass Fairbanks was not only in the art but in the visual action.”

Joe Shuster – “I was a great fan of Douglas Fairbanks, and so was Jerry and I tried to use his stance, the way Douglass Fairbanks looked, …with his hands on his hips, in Robin Hood and Mark of Zorro, in all those he had those marvelous attitude…” ” [His costume] was inspired by the costume pictures that Fairbanks did: they greatly influenced us. He did The Mark of Zorro, and Robin Hood, and a marvelous one called The Black Pirate – Fairbanks would swing on ropes very much like Superman flying… the feeling of action as he was flying or jumping or leaping – a flowing cape would give it movement.

    Batman:
Bill Finger – “Batman was a combination of Douglas Fairbanks [who played Zorro] and Sherlock Holmes.”

Bill Finger- “My idea was to have Batman be a combination of Douglas Fairbanks [Zorro], Sherlock Holmes, The Shadow, and Doc Savage as well.”

Bob Kane -“Zorro’s use of a mask to conceal his identity as Don Diego gave me the idea of giving Batman a secret identity…Bruce Wayne would be a man of means who put on a façade of being effete. Zorro rode a black horse called Tornado and would enter a cave and exit from a grandfather clock in the living room. The bat-cave was inspired by this cave in Zorro. I didn’t want Batman to be a Superhero with superpowers…So I made Batman an ordinary human being; he is just an athlete who has the physical prowess of Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., who was my all-time favorite hero in the movies.”
    ————

Although it’s true he is more the proto-Superhero
Still the absence of Zorro is surprising.
He even qualifies under the authors established criteria.
Further beyond the secret ID, he has the hero secret lair.
The loyal sidekick / and sole confidant.
A recognizable costume. A recognizable symbol.
Main nemesis he marked for life and endlessly pursues him.
Belt full of weapons and arsenal of his time. Proficient and trained to peak in all.
Yes he originated in the pulps, but he already had comics before most Silver Age heroes were even created.
And there was a “modern”(time of the Shadow) legacy movie incarnation; Zorro rides again; swinging from modern city rooftops, driving a black sedan through the city, and fighting mobsters with tommy guns, all before Batman.
    https://i.imgflip.com/49ed92.gif

    • I really appreciate your well thought out approach. At this stage in the site, since I have already covered all the major superhero movies pre-2020, I will definitely give it some serious thought to look into Zorro. I do own the two Antonio Banderas movies and will especially look for Zorro Rides Again.

  72. Missing men in black, this is a comic book adaptation

    • Got all four of them in there, even did a list of the best aliens from the franchise. Malibu comics, bought by Marvel so technically they’re even a Marvel movie

  73. Have you had any consideration for The Strongest Man in the World? Kurt Russel, Cesar Romero.

  74. Exhaustive list! One question and one suggestion: do you plan to keep it updated; and and the one notable exclusion I’d throw in are the Conan movies, which were based just as much on the comic series. Red Sonja was created whole cloth in the comics. Hey, if He-Man can make it, which was just a toyline spun off into different media to milk children for their money, this should too!

    • I have not abandoned this site or this list but it is currently pretty low on my priorities so it will likely only get updated a couple times a year at most. I may have to do some research on the Conan situation at some point. I’m a stickler for my own rules but have adjusted them. I believe Red Sonya was first introduced in comics but Conan was first introduced in novels. If either movie is based on a specific comic story I would definitely add it but not sure otherwise. He-Man is included because they came to Earth so it was set in modern times and not just a fantasy story.

      • I was wondering if you include movies (I’m assuming live action only here) based on Japanese manga comics?  If so, please let me know — I might be able to suggest a few.  Bear in mind that some of them are not children’s comics.  Two examples would be Rapeman and Hentai Kamen (AKA Panty-man — he assumes great powers when he wears his girlfriend’s panties on his face; the pheromones give him super-powers that he uses to fight a series of perverted bad guys).  There are other titles that would definitely fit:  Fullmetal Alchemist, Devilman, Casshern: The Movie, Silver Hawk, The Guyver, and Alita: Battle Angel, just to name a few.  If you do animated films, you can’t overlook the overall importance and influence of Astroboy, originally released as a TV series in 1963 (also movies).  I only assumed you discount animated films due to the often over-saturation of anime films.  In Indonesia the BumiLangit Cinematic Universe (and yes, that’s what they call it),is currently only one title — Gundala.  But they’ve already started filming 3 more as a result of Gundala’s success.  It’s even been released in an English dubbed version. As for American films, have you included Faust: Love of the Damned (2000)?  An American version of Alita: Battle Angel has been released as a live-action film, but it’s based on a Japanese manga.  A movie that would apply is Yellowjacket (WWII – 1950’s Era Heroics) originally published by Charleton Comics, with the movie released 2005 as Monarch of the Moon.. All the best,James Carlson

      • I have reviewed about half of those you mentioned and several of the others are on my list. I don’t include foreign titles based on manga because there are too many but I do include foreign superhero movies based on manga, animated or live action. I’ve covered Tiger and Bunny, 2 of the My Hero Academia films, and the first Hentai Kamen which I loved and want to get around to the sequel.

I’ve heard about Rapeman but it’s low on my list of films I’m interested in seeking out. Thanks for visiting!

  75. Red Sonja (1985) is missing

  76. Oh Sweet Jesus why have you foresaken us.

  78. Eric White Pine Packard
