The Chair Interview at my 2nd Home, Talking Horror
I wanted to take a quick moment to shout out my second home on the internet. While I love watching and writing about superhero and comic book movies and TV shows here, it’s nice to stretch my legs a little bit and delve into other genres. So when Tyson Carter put a call for help to make a new horror site, I thought it was high time I spread my wings a little bit. Over there, I will mainly be writing articles on horror Kickstarter projects and the like, seeing what’s interesting, what’s worth your money, and what might not have a bat’s chance in hell of getting funded. And once in a while I might toss out a horror movie review or two as well. So make sure you follow the new site Talking Horror. But not only that, I also have my first article over there that I’d like to share. I got the chance to talk to a recently successful Kickstarter project for a horror movie based on a graphic novel called the Chair. So check out my interview with Peter Simeti and leave a comment, why don’t you! Until next time, this has been Bubbawheat for Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights.
Graphic Horror: Tales From the Crypt Season 4
Hello boils and ghouls, it’s Halloween and I’ve come to the end of my current re-watch of Tales From the Crypt with season 4. Ok, technically the day after Halloween, but you get the point. I hope you have enjoyed my romp through the terrorvision episodes and if you would like me to get to the last three seasons before next Halloween be sure to let me know in the comments. While season 4 had a few more weak spots than the earlier seasons especially during the first half of the season, it still had quite a few high points as it made its way through to the last half of the season. There were several episodes this season that felt like they were period pieces, though they often also had a sense of taking place in modern day.

Graphic Horror: Bordello Of Blood
Tales From the Crypt: Bordello of Blood 1996
Even though I haven’t managed to catch as many horror movies this month as I would have liked to, since I am going through several seasons of the Tales From the Crypt television show I thought it was only fitting to finish out watching the final movie. Even though it’s actually the second movie that was released just a year after Demon Knight, it even features the return of a couple elements from Demon Knight including the key and William Sadler, though the latter returned covered in mummy wraps to talk with the Cryptkeeper. Out of the three movies, this one is definitely the most comedic as noted by fact that it stars Dennis Miller. It also has the most nudity of the three as there are several scenes that take place within the bordello even though they are all vampire women, they are often mostly naked vampire women. And even though I hadn’t seen this film probably since it first came out on home video/aired on cable I still remembered the final twist so that wasn’t a surprise.

Graphic Horror: Ritual
Ritual 2002
While a lot of people are familiar with the great television series Tales From the Crypt that ran for seven seasons on HBO, there are slightly fewer people who realize that they made a feature length film towards the end of their run called Demon Knight. Even fewer people realize that they made another movie the next year starring Dennis Miller called Bordello of Blood. And not even I realized that they had a this as a third movie to round out the trilogy. But when Bordello of Blood was a disaster at the box office, those plans were scrapped and the film, possibly still at the script stage was sold to Universal who stripped out all the references to the Cryptkeeper and Tales From the Crypt and released it as a solo film several years later. It wasn’t until even later that the Tales From the Crypt presents was restored when it was released on DVD and the Cryptkeeper scenes added back for the release, albeit with a very low budget version of the Cryptkeeper puppet that was also used in the DVD release of the television series which was around the same time. And after all this passing around, was the movie actually worth it? Not really. It felt like one of the mediocre episodes of the show drawn out into an hour forty-five. Mysteries were confusing for the sake of being a reveal closer towards the end, but it just made things confusing rather than interesting. And the final payoff was pretty weak anyway. I almost would have rather seen the Tales From the Crypt name left off of this movie.

Graphic Horror: Tales From the Crypt Season 1
Welcome to my look back at one of my favorite horror TV shows of all time, Tales From the Crypt. While I never actually saw the show while it aired on HBO, instead I caught up with it several years later when it was airing late at night on Fox. And while I imagine that little to none of the blood and gore was cut out of the show, I did miss out on the plenty of sex and language that’s present throughout the show. When the show came out, it was an interesting experiment that throughout its run showcased many notable directors and actors. And while it was still on a somewhat smaller budget, especially during the early seasons, it managed to showcase some great special effects, especially when it came to the animatronic Cryptkeeper that opened and closed every episode with John Kassir’s iconic voice.

Filmwhys #34: Rosemary’s Baby and Supergirl
Episode 34 of the Why Haven’t You Seen This Film Podcast where my guest Eric from TheIPC asks me why I haven’t seen Rosemary’s Baby, the horror classic from Roman Polanski about a woman who is having the devil’s baby but takes the entire course of the pregnancy to fully realize it. And in return, I ask him why he hasn’t seen Supergirl, one of the worst films to come out of the Salkind Superman era with Faye Dunaway hamming it up as the villain and practically no budget for any of the special effects. *Warning: there is some minor language in this episode as I found it hard to talk about his Shitfest otherwise* Also, the Filmwhys archives have been fully updated if you are looking for any recent episodes that had fallen out of the PodOmatic RSS/iTunes feed.

Filmwhys #30: The Thing and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
It’s time once again for another episode of the Why Haven’t You Seen This Film Podcast where my guest is Lackey from The Nightmare Gallery who asks me why I haven’t seen John Carpenter’s The Thing from 1982 which is a marvel of practical creature effects, tension, and paranoia set in the Antarctic wastes. And in return I ask him why he hasn’t seen Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Edgar Wright’s homage to video games, anime, and comic books as Michael Cera battles seven evil exes in order to win the heart of Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Graphic Horror: Afflicted
Graphic Horror: Afflicted 2014
Even though my blogathon is over, I like the tag “Graphic Horror” enough that I’ll be keeping it and using it right alongside “Almost Super” for horror movies that aren’t quite superhero movies, even if they are based on graphic novels and therefore included in my big list of superhero and comic book movies. When I saw the trailer and early promotional tweets about this movie I was very interested. It was a found footage movie very similar in style to Chronicle only with a horror twist to it, where these two friends go on a world trip and one of them catches something that starts to make him sick, but then gives him superpowers before taking a much darker turn. There was another element to the story that the PR wanted to keep a secret, but I didn’t go digging into what it was until they decided it wasn’t that big of a secret to keep once it hit its wide release and I found out that the superpowers were brought on because he is becoming a vampire. This actually made me a little bit more interested in the movie because I’m always a fan of vampire movies and I thought this would do for vampire movies that Chronicle did for superhero movies and I think I was right.

Graphic Horror: 30 Days of Night
30 Days of Night 2007
This Graphic (Novel) Horror blogathon is coming to a close and I’m finally coming around to one of the movies that first came to mind when I was thinking about movies that I should cover. I saw it back when it was still fairly new and quite enjoyed it, but hadn’t seen it since then and have never seen the sequel. I always thought it was an interesting concept for a vampire movie. One of the vampire’s biggest weaknesses was the fact that they couldn’t be out in the sunlight, but in the Arctic Circle there’s a full 30 days of night without any sun, not only that but according to this story the town basically cuts itself off from any other town South of it for the duration of the darkest part of winter so this clan of vampires can essentially feed at will for a full month without any fear of being discovered and stopped by a larger force from outside of town. There are also plenty of great visuals along the way that really had a graphic novel feel to them, whether or not they were actually taken from the pages of the original comic.
