I’m hosting #MTOS this Sunday – Comic Book Adaptations

This coming Sunday, August 23rd I will be hosting #MTOS Movie Talk on Sunday. It’s a weekly Twitter conversation where ten questions are asked, one every ten minutes starting at 20.00 GMT, or 2pm US Central time, I’m not quite sure how that conversion works, but any time I’ve joined in it’s started at 2pm Central. Of course, if you want to prepare yourself ahead of time, I have conveniently prepared the questions for you right below so you have time to think about your answers. Otherwise, just follow me @Bubbawheat and answer the questions as they come, don’t forget to use the hashtag #MTOS, and also follow #MTOS on Twitter and the founders, @raghavmodi and @askimrach.

Book Nights: Overtaken

Overtaken by Mark H. Kruger

After finishing up the first book in this series, Overpowered I was very excited to move onto the sequel. Even though it took me a bit longer to get into the book, once I got about halfway through I really wanted to rush through to the end. I’m glad that I was able to dig into this series which has really brought me around on the superhero novel, as the first couple I read were bad to mediocre, but these last three have all been a real treat to read. Not quite enough for me to go seeking out more on my own, but I won’t be turning down any future offers to review if they come my way. Here, Kruger is able to take the hero that he built up in Overpowered and change the situation in an unlikely and fascinating way. As usual, there will be some spoilers in this review so fair warning.

Five Reasons Why Fantastic Four Movies Fail

I will immediately preface this post by saying that my familiarity to this franchise extends only to the four films as well as the mid 90’s cartoon which I haven’t watched since then. Though I have heard other descriptions of how the team works in the comics, at least before it was cancelled by Marvel earlier this year. This team of heroes has gone through three different iterations, none of them have been critical successes, one of them wasn’t even released, and only one was much of a financial success. It doesn’t seem like it should be that hard to adapt this family of four heroes with unique powers that act together as a family, I mean the Incredibles was able to do it, so why can’t the Fantastic Four? Here are a few reasons why I think it’s been so difficult.

Infographic: The Members of the Fantastic Four Ranked

Which is your movie highlight this summer? If you like science fiction, the new Fantastic Four film will most likely be on your list already. With new actors for the main characters and Chronicle director Josh Trank taking over responsibility, this film is expected to become a major success. You can expect lots of special effects created with latest technologies, which promise to be inspiring and entertaining. Check out the infographic below which was sent to me and ranks all the Marvel heroes who have been a member of the Fantastic Four at one point in time. Enjoy!

Book Nights: Overpowered

Overpowered by Mark Kruger

My track record with superhero novels has been hit or miss, but somehow I keep getting asked to review them. If only filmmakers or studio PR were this forthcoming. But after my very pleasant experience with The Heart Does Not Grow Back, I was offered another opportunity to review a superhero novel. Largely because it was the same people I happily accepted, and since the book was the second in a series they graciously included this one which was the start of this series. There have been a lot of films centered around young adult book series lately and I have seen very few of them, at first glance Overpowered with its young heroine Nica front and center seems like it might just be another blip in a sea of similar books. But I really enjoyed this story about a small town with a sinister secret, it had elements of Disturbing Behavior (in a good way) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and after I finished, I’m glad I’ve already got the second book ready to go.

Thursday Movie Picks – Comic Book Movies

Once again I saw a very appropriate topic from Wandering Through the Shelves Thursday Movie Picks theme for this week. The last time I joined in the topic was superhero movies, and this time it’s the other end of the spectrum that I cover for this site: non-superhero comic book movies. Check out his picks as well as the other choices over there.

Blogathon: Saturday Morning Memories Announcement

Check out what should be a very fun blogathon over at Channel: Superhero. I hope you join in!

Bubbawheat's avatarChannel: Superhero

It has been a lot of fun running this site for the past few months, but one thing I would like to see more of is some interaction, and what better way to do that than by having a blogathon that everyone can join in on. And here at Channel: Superhero some of the earliest superhero TV shows that any of us have watched are the Saturday Morning Cartoons of our youths. So for this blogathon, I’d like us to go back and revisit some of those memories of the cartoons we grew up with. Not only that, but most of us now have kids and the landscape of superhero cartoons have greatly changed over the years. It makes me wonder what they would think about the shows that we watched in our youths.

C2E2 Days 2 & 3

C2E2 is already over and it’s been a long weekend. I’m going to be combining my details of days 2 & 3 into a single post for a couple reasons, first is that I did not get home from day 2 until rather late at night and I basically went straight to sleep, and second is that I did not spend very much time on day 3 so there’s not too much to report there. Overall, it was a lot of fun. I’ve got tons of pictures which will show up as their own post tomorrow and I’ve got a little video project that I’m working on and hope to finish within the next few days so I’m excited about that. Enough chat, let’s get onto the show!

C2E2 Day 1

I’m home from my first day at Chicago’s Comics and Entertainment Expo 2015 and I am exhausted! I spent most of my time on the floor, I’ve got hopefully a nice little project in the works that I’ll be able to share after the event is over, and I also got a couple panel rundowns to share with you.
