Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog

Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog 2008

This may seem an odd choice to review, it’s a musical, the main character is a villain, it was made to appear on the internet, and it’s only 42 minutes long. It actually seems much more like a choice for a Superhero Shorts. But it’s become such a phenomenon that I had to give it it’s own review. It was made during the 2008 writer’s strike over a very short period of time and yet it somehow managed to become this incredibly popular thing that really helped pave the way for all of the internet media we have today. I mean, there’s lots of people that actually make a living from revenue earned from their web series and videos that they post on YouTube. I won’t go so far as to say that Dr. Horrible made all that happen, but it did help prove that it could happen. When you look at it now, it can be hard to see why it was so popular, it was a musical, it was about a villain created for this short, none of the stars were very big names, and it was going to be released for free on the internet. But one person was able to make it a success: Joss Whedon. His talent and his online following helped make it what it is today. I’ve watched it over a dozen times, and I love it every time.

FTMN Poll: Who’s your favorite X-Men villain?

Last week I asked what your favorite X-Men was, this time around I’m asking who your favorite villain is? One great thing about the X-Men is that the villains are often just as interesting and complex as the X-Men themselves. Many times even becoming allies during different periods of time. Rather than just being evil for evil’s sake, though there are a few of those in there too, it’s their different ideologies that put them at odds with the X-Men. I pulled this list together mostly from my memory of the 90’s cartoon and the movies, if I left any biggies out please leave a comment telling me about them. Which one is your favorite? The all-powerful Apocalypse? The mysterious Mystique? Or one of the many government officials working to pass laws and public favor against mutants in general? Vote! Leave a comment! You know the drill. Until next time, this has been Bubbawheat for Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights.

What makes a good villain?

I’ll start this off as I tend to start off all of these blog posts, with an update. I had planned to watch Zoom and Sky High with my daughter Jena, but then we took a trip to the video store and I saw the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle trilogy staring at me. I left it up to her to decide between Sky High and TMNT, and she picked TMNT. So the next three reviews will be the original live action Turtles movies. I will leave the animated reboot for another time for now. Another thing that surprised me a little bit is that when I checked some of my site stats, I saw that these editorial style blogs tend to be more popular than most of my movie reviews. Huh. I’m also considering adding another post per week focusing on just a trailer for a movie, either upcoming or classic. Let me know if you’d be interested in reading that by commenting below. Enough of the update, let’s get to the question in the title, shall we?
