Five by Five? Try Seven by Seven

First off, I’d like to say thanks to FilmsRruss for picking me along with six other blogs to share with his readers in the blog meme “7×7 link award”. I apologize to him in advance if this post comes off as insincere, but I just don’t look at these chain letter awards the same way I used to. I honestly do appreciate the fact that another blog likes this one enough to share it with their readers, but I don’t buy into the whole “award” mentality that it’s supposed to give off. That said, I decided to not just follow along with the basics of it and decided to go on a blog journey. Everyone who got the award would mention who gave it to them, so I went backwards through the links to see if I could get to the origin of this award.

I initially thought it was kind of odd to have options like “Most Beautiful Post” and after I tracked it back about 30 or so blogs I realized why. It brought me from movie blogs back to writing blogs, to general blogs, and finally the origin: travel/photo blogs. In fact, the origin wasn’t even an award at all, it was a blogging/Twitter trending topic called My 7 Links. Unfortunately, I missed the exact point where it went from being blogs posting their 7 links and tagging seven other blogs to being an “award” since honestly, after 40 to 50 blogs, I wasn’t really paying much attention to the actual blog and was more interested in tracking down the origin point, even though I could have probably just Googled it. But even after finding the origin, and playing down the concept of the award, and the fact that this is a pretty new blog with not many posts to choose from, I will still follow the concept of the meme, at least the original concept so if you’re looking to find out something about me no one else knows, you’re out of luck.

1. My most beautiful post.

The Shadow – as I mentioned earlier, I thought it was kind of odd to have this option in a movie blog so I just picked the one that has my current favorite movie poster that I thought was absolutely beautiful.

2. My most popular post.

Captain America – I don’t exactly know why, especially when the new Captain America post didn’t get all that much attention.

3. My most controversial post.

Why are there so many bad superhero movies? – there hasn’t been much controversy at all on any of my posts, so “most controversial” is more like “a couple people slightly disagreed with me”.

4. My most helpful post.

33 of the worst superhero movies ever made – because we all need a little help to figure out which movies to avoid.

5. A post whose success surprised me.

Blankman – It didn’t get a lot of views when I posted it, and it has yet to get any comments on it, but it keeps getting hits from random searches much more than any of my other posts and is likely to overtake Captain America to become my most popular post at some point in time.

6. A post I feel didn’t get the attention it deserved.

The Incredibles – It’s one of my favorite movies period and yet when I wrote the review it just kind of came and went.

7. The post I’m most proud of.

Batman: The Movie – It’s a fun movie, I liked it, I liked the review, and it got a lot of good kudos.

And finally for the chain letter portion of it, which I will participate in the spirit of it, and by the original rules nominating 5 other blogs. But these are 5 other blogs that I think are worth visiting, I enjoy reading them and I think others would enjoy them too. If they would like to participate in this meme, it’s up to them. And because I felt like it, I updated the award graphic to make it a little more super, using part of the Avengers’ logo, the X-Men logo, and Captain America’s shield. Feel free to use it if you wish.

1. Cigarette Burns – a great site that focuses on straight up horror movies as well as Asian horror movies and other movies that are a little left of center.

2. MMO Grinder – a fun video series that checks out free to play MMOs and lets you know if they’re worth playing or not.

3. Fog’s Movie Reviews – a great guy with great taste in movies and tons of discussion in every post.

4. 5 Word Movie Reviews – I plug this guy a lot, but that’s because I read his reviews the most. It helps that he posts every single day. He’s already passed my goal of 100 movies this year and it’s only April.

5. Morgan on Media – Another guy who has a similar taste in movies as I do and can definitely write about it. Check it out.

And there you have it, there’s my exploration, deconstruction, and participation in my first award meme. Until next time, this has been Bubbawheat for Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights.

  1. Bubbaaaaa. Thanks man! Sorry for not getting to this sooner. Blogging wise this last week has been crazy. πŸ˜€ In a good way though, its good.

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it. πŸ˜€ Remember that “Great taste in movies” next time I do something crazy like recommend “Project X” or something stupid, and cut me a break LOL. πŸ˜€

Nice to share the honor with Morgan, he and I go wayyyy back. Internet years should be measured like dog years. πŸ˜€

    • Not getting to this sooner? I don’t think you could get much sooner than the same day unless you commented before I posted it πŸ™‚ Been enjoying your reviews ever since I started reading them!

    • Nigh-on 10 years now. I actually just checked (I still have the Halls Wiki archives for some reason). March 22, 2003 is when you joined Creation Matrix. I had been there about a year prior. Looooong time. πŸ˜€

Bubbawheat, I too appreciate the honor; I also appreciate your putting in the effort to track down the origins of this meme. Pretty cool.

      • Thanks, while I was following the links back it went from “this is pretty cool” to “dang it, a deleted blog from just last month!” to “will this thing ever end” to “baby kangaroos?! how did I get here?!” to “oh that’s where it started… huh. Well that’s an hour of my life I’ll never get back”

Well, maybe that’s being more funny than truthful, but I did find a blog that had a bunch of kangaroo pictures. If I ever do something like this again, I’ll have to take more detailed notes, it was an interesting journey.

  2. It’s kind of appropriate for a superhero-movie nerd to do the origin story for this thing! Thanks for the plug (again!) and for pointing out a few other new sites for me to have a look at πŸ™‚

    • Superhero nerd! You know, I amazingly never thought of it as getting to the origin story, odd.

And I think Cigarette Burns would be right up your alley, you’d find many candidates for WTF Sundays.

  3. sanclementejedi

How many years back did that thread go when you started following it?

    • Surprisingly it only took me back less than a year. It was started June of 11. A lot of bloggers would do a reply post like the very next day, stuff like that has the opportunity to spread really quickly.

  4. sanclementejedi

Nice so the 7X7 spread like crabs in college dorm πŸ˜‰

I love the research you did on this one. Really interesting that it is only a year old. I read something once about email chain letters, and why they always say to send to X number of people, and that it is because only a certain percent will follow through. I suspect that the 7×7 might have had a little bit easier time since it allowed people to advertise their own stuff as well.

    • It doesn’t surprise me that you picked up on the research part of it πŸ™‚ Although if I hadn’t gone through the trouble of tracking it back, I might have easily been one of those that didn’t pass the award along.

  6. When I was first sent the “Award” I was equally sceptical about a chain blog, but by the time I got my second plug I thought why the hell not. Very interesting approach by researching the history of the award, the tweet that you sent me about missing blogposts makes slightly more sense now!

I’m glad that you really like your Batman the Movie review, that was the first of your posts that I read. “Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb!”

    • Yeah, I don’t know if I’d do another one of these chain awards again, and I don’t think any of the blogs I passed the award to continued it, and I’m ok with that. And I forgot to mention in this post that I hit a few dead ends and had to search to catch up on the other link in the chain, but luckily I actually managed to just skip over the missing links and not jump to a whole different section altogether.
