Follow Friday: Flixchatter
Welcome to another edition of Follow Friday where each week I feature and interview a fellow blogger and follow their suggestion to another blog to feature next week. I prefer this over a blogroll because it gives each blog their own time to shine, plus I personally rarely click on blogrolls so why would I expect you to? Not only that, but I get the chance to check out some great blogs I might not have found otherwise found, talk to some great people, and share the conversation with you. Of course, if you would rather see something like a blogroll, I have collected all of my previous Follow Friday sites in list form which you can find right at the top of the page. This week I was directed by Castor over at Anomalous Material to check out Ruth’s blog Flixchatter
Even though I sometimes think that lists are a total cop-out when it comes to content, I can’t deny that I enjoy reading a well done and entertaining list, and that’s something that Flixchatter has a lot of besides a lot of great reviews. One of my favorite recent ones is 80’s-90’s action flicks that are so bad they’re good, which includes the 1989 Dolph Lundgren Punisher movie in the honorable mentions. I thought it was an awful Punisher movie, but I also thought it was a totally fun, if generic, action flick. There’s also some nice reviews, like a couple for the recent Bourne movie, and more than anything else, Ruth seems like a pretty cool person. More than her site, I’ve seen her around many other blogs that I frequent in the comments sections, it’s totally worth a look see. But enough from me, let’s hear from Flixchatter herself.
Bubbawheat: Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and what made you decide to start a film blog?
Ruth M.: Well, I’m originally from Indonesia and I’ve been a movie fan for life. Movies are in my blood as my late dad was in the film biz in my home country before I was born. I love writing too, so it seems like a natural move for me to actually have a movie blog to combine my two passions. My blog actually got started almost on a whim when I had a project to design a corporate blog for a client, which prompted me to then start one of my own.
BW: What’s the favorite recurring feature you run on your site?
RM: It’d have to be the monthly Five for the Fifth posts which I started last January. I didn’t think it was going to be so successful but I always get a lot of comments every month so I’m quite happy with that.
BW: What made you decide to add on multiple contributors, and how did you meet them?
RM:Well, I’ve known quite a few people at work when we talk about movies and I’m always open for contributors just to get different perspectives on my site. I can’t possibly watch every single genres so my contributors offer things I otherwise can’t write about on FlixChatter. There is a variety of people who contribute on my blog, some I know personally, and some I meet through the blog.
BW: What’s your favorite genre of movies?
RM: It’s quite a mix really. I like romantic dramas as much as I do action thrillers, so I guess my top 3 favorite movie genres would be romantic dramas, action and sci-fi thriller.
BW: If someone were to only look at only one post on your site, which one should it be?
RM: I hope you won’t consider me cheating here but you did say ‘one post’ so I’d say it’s the Features Post tab at the top of my blog so people can see the breath and variety of posts I offer. If that doesn’t count, then I’d be happy if people take the time to read my movie pitch Hearts Want which is a romantic thriller.
BW: Which do you enjoy writing more, lists, or reviews? Which is harder?
RM: Oh lists are definitely much easier to write even though it can be time consuming as I’m notorious about fact-checking and research, it’s the journalistic sensibility in me 🙂 Reviews are still tough to write though I’m getting more comfortable doing it. I often write down the general thoughts of the movie in bullet points first before I go about writing reviews.
BW: What’s your favorite superhero movie?
RM: Hmmm, tough one as I grew up watching Superman movies and Superman: The Movie is the first film I remember watching as a wee girl. But I think nowadays my favorite is Batman Begins as I love how the origins story of Bruce Wayne is explored in great depth and we see the man before he dons the cowl and cape.
BW: And what blog do you suggest that I follow for next week?
RM: I’d like to suggest my friend Michael from It Rains… You Get Wet blog. Definitely a blog worth checking out that covers movies/music/books. His TMT (a Theatre… a Movie… and a Time) series are really fascinating!
