Thanks for a wonderful 2012
Like many people, the holiday season has kept me busy, and away from the television for the most part. I’m currently taking in all of Watchmen for a hopefully epic post in the near future. I watched the theatrical version, and Tales from the Black Freighter, and plan to watch Under the Hood and hopefully the Ultimate Cut and some more special features before writing my post on it. But for now, I’ll join everyone else in taking a look back at what 2012 has brought me.
The Stats
I don’t talk about it too much, but I look at my stats page an awful lot. This year I’ve reached over 24,000 views, it’s not a lot when compared to many of the other sites I frequent, but considering I’ve only covered 7 2012 releases, it’s not all that bad. My most viewed post is not surprisingly my interview with Thomas Jane about his independently made Punisher short film, Dirty Laundry. Next up is my retro review of Robocop, which I imagine has found a lot of search engine hits due to the oft-postponed and somewhat controversial looking remake coming soon. Behind that is my review of the original X-Men movie due to the surprising number of people searching for Mystique’s feet. Rounding out the next few are some of my other Superhero Shorts interviews, for the Captain Planet trailer, Shamelessly She-Hulk, which next to Dirty Laundry is still my favorite interview to read, and the Hillywood Show which brought a lot of one-time traffic from their own fans. My most commented post is my recent top 10 superhero movies which brought a lot of support and fairly little controversy. Below that is my post on Special Features, which has made me make a point to actually watch more special features, so I suppose that’s a good thing.
The Movies
I’ve reviewed 102 superhero movies this year, well technically 100 since I posted the first 2 Superman movies in 2011. I watched 4 of those movies in theaters after having not been to a theater in about 4 years or so. I hope to watch at least 6 movies in theaters in 2013. I’ve done 26 Superhero Shorts interviews, talking with all sorts of different types of filmmakers with one thing in common: a passion for superheroes. My favorite to watch is a close tie between Batman: Puppetmaster and Dirty Laundry. My favorite to read is a close tie between Shamelessly She-Hulk and Dirty Laundry. I’ve watched more good movies than bad movies, though I haven’t gone and done an official count, and the bad ones I still enjoyed watching because there’s nothing like watching a bad movie. My favorite reboot has been The Amazing Spider-Man, my favorite animated movie has been The Incredibles, my favorite cheesy movie was Flash Gordon. My least favorite was Barb Wire. My biggest surprise was Super, I went in not expecting anything, and got something completely left of center. It may not have been great, but it was certainly memorable. My biggest disappointment was the Spirit, it had the right look, the right actors, the right tone, but it just came up way too short.
The People
Of course, I’m not writing this just for myself, it’s about the interaction and the people who come to visit here and comment. My biggest supporters have been Morgan from Morgan on Media and Ryan from 5 Word Movie Reviews, so thank you both. There have also been many others who have been great to this site, Fogs, The Focused Filmographer, Jaina, Dusty, NTEMP, 3 Guys 1 Movie, Le0pard13, and many more. And all those I’ve interviewed for my Follow Friday, which I’d like to get back to, but it’s just hard for me to keep up with what I’ve got now until I figure out some sort of schedule or something, but for now, it’s more haphazard, and I thank you for bearing with me.
The Future
For 2013 and beyond, I plan to keep doing what I’ve been doing. I hope to find new short films and talk to the filmmakers behind them, I’ve still got my big list of superhero movies that I keep churning through. There’s still a lot of major films I haven’t gotten to yet, and a bunch of great animated straight-to-DVD films I want to watch. There’s also plenty of exciting new movies coming out to theaters and to DVD. I also would like to catch up on some big movies that I’ve somehow missed in a feature I’m working on. If you’d like to be a part of it, just shoot me an e-mail at Bubbawheat@msn.com, all I’m asking is for you to help me pick out a movie I’ve never seen but should have (and there’s a lot of biggies out there), and I’ll help you pick out a superhero movie you’ve never seen, and we’ll both watch them during one month in 2013. Also, if there’s a feature that I’ve dropped and you’d like to see come back, leave a comment and let me know. Should I bring back some FTMN polls? Should I find more aspects of superhero movies in general to blog about? Should I bring back Follow Friday sooner rather than later? Until next time, this has been Bubbawheat for Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights.
