The 100 Essential Superhero Movies project needs you!

Just after finishing up my last blogathon this past March, I stumbled upon an idea that I really wanted to do for yet another blogathon here at Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights. When I first started this site I had a list of 100 theatrically released superhero movies that I wanted to cover in that first year, and while I did reach my goal of watching and reviewing 100 movies, I didn’t stick to that list because there were some other direct-to-DVD releases that I wanted to watch and in many cases they are just as good and often better than the theatrically released ones. So what I wanted to do was to come up with a list of 100 superhero movies that are essential viewing for a superhero fan up through the end of 2013. This isn’t just a list of the 100 best superhero movies because that might be an easier list to come up with, but these are 100 movies that are important to the category of superhero movies as a whole. Some of the choices are quite easy to make, but I’m down to the last 20 movies and this is where I need your help.

Each day during the entire month of May, I want to post an entry from someone arguing why a lesser known or generally considered bad superhero movie should be included on my list of the 100 Essential Superhero Movies and I will include a poll for readers to vote whether or not they agree. It doesn’t have to be a long review, it can be just a couple paragraphs or so on why you feel the movie is an “Essential Superhero Movie”. A week after the end of the month, I will tally up all the poll results and the 20 movies with the most “yes” votes will be included on my list. Of course, I’m not entirely sure what I’m going to be doing with this list just yet aside from giving it a place here on my site, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to share them. If you want to be involved, just let me know what movie you want to write about and I will add it to the list. Remember though, I don’t need someone arguing for Superman: The Movie, or The Dark Knight, but I could use someone to argue the validity of The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, or Elektra, Iron Man 2, or the Dolph Lundgren Punisher movie. Plenty of movies to choose from, you can even argue for a movie that might be a stretch to call it a “superhero movie”. I’m also open to have someone argue either for or against a movie already on my list that might be considered “iffy”. Here’s who’s involved so far:

The Vern: Orgasmo
Aaron Miracle: Condorman
Nick Jobe: Arahan
Todd Leibenow: The Fleisher Superman collection
The Non-Review: Meteor Man
Chris: Spider-Man 3
T: Nick Fury, Generation X
Coogs Film Blog: X-Men: The Last Stand
Today I Watched a Movie: Daredevil

And here’s the list of 80 movies that I’ve come up with, and if you disagree with any of my choices, you can also join in by writing an argument against the movie’s inclusion. I think this should be fun, so jump in with your choices! Since I’m starting this in May, I would like to see your post sent to me by May 1st at Until next time, this has been Bubbawheat for Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights.

  1. Man, really, no Spider-Man 3 on that list? Come on now. I already wrote a pretty in-depth defense of the movie about a year ago (, so I dunno if you’d wanna count a re-post, but it should definitely be among the list, especially considering some of the more questionable inclusions. đŸ˜›

    • It’s one that I’m happy to see someone argue for though I didn’t care for it and it was a very tough decision not to include it considering it does have the negative reaction which partly caused the current rebooted iteration of Spidey. If you’d like to whittle it down a bit and tailor it a bit more towards this blogathon I’d be happy to have you on board!

  2. man, I have 3 suggestions…

Flashpoint Paradox (being fantastic), Nick Fury (notable disaster) and Generation X (1996 tv movie notable disaster).

I can argue for all 3
