Introducing: BlokeBusting the Essentials with Paul

Bubbawheat here and I’m happy to introduce a new addition to Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights. A few weeks ago, I put out a call on Twitter for someone interested in joining the site to help give me some extra motivation to reinvigorate this site. And to my pleasant surprise, Paul answered the call. I knew him best from his podcast BlokeBusters, and my idea for him is to explore my list of 100 Essential Superhero Movies. It’s a list that I’m quite proud of, and I thought this would be a good excuse for me to revisit some of these movies as well and we will both reconsider whether or not these movies really do deserve to be included on this list.

So, starting January 1st and hopefully every other week we will both be watching one of the movies. Some of these will be for the first time for Paul, but they will all be re-watches for myself. Paul will share his thoughts, I’ll share mine and if they have changed since first watching the movie, I’ll also go into more details as to why I think it deserves to be considered an “essential” superhero movie, and when I say “essential” I mean that it is important to the history of superhero cinema in one way or another. Either through sheer quality, but in many cases it’s about some of the behind the scenes stories that impacted superhero movies in one way or another. And afterwards, Paul will decide whether he would recommend the movie to someone else and whether he thinks the movie deserves to be on the list or not.

Now, as I mentioned, I know Paul from his podcast BlokeBusters and have even guested on an episode. But I think it’s time to let Paul speak for himself so he can tell you all about his projects as well as his personal experience with superhero movies.

“Hello! Hello? Is this thing on? Oh wait, it’s a written medium. Ah. Hang on…”

Hi there everyone! Tis’ I, your friendly neighbourhood podcaster who’s branching off into written reviews. Nice to meet you all. As Mr. Wheat (or Bubba to his friends) said, I answered his call on Social Media to help him with this project. It sounded like a lot of fun, because I’m a bit of a glutton for taking on more things to do than I really need to. Ah well. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to sharing my thoughts and viewpoints with you, the lucky readers. As you can probably tell, I have a rather relaxed style of writing which I think will really help you all to come with me on my journey. Plus I’m always up for talking about film. It’s kinda my thing.

So I suppose you want to hear about my credentials. Let’s see here, they must be lying around here somewhere. Ah, here they are. I’ve been a podcaster since 2012, so I’m basically the new Roger Ebert/Simon Mayo/insert-name-of-popular-film-critic-here. I’ve been doing BlokeBusters since 2012, I’ve been a frequent guest on Soiled Restroom Cinema (against my better judgement), usually helping to rip into Adam Sandler, and I’ve recently started a podcast called Filmily Fortunes,  a show where I host 2 film review podcasts every month and put them head-to-head answering film trivia questions. So yeah, I’ve talked about film a lot. And when it comes to Superhero films, I’m definitely more than willing to give them a try. I’ve really enjoyed watching the growth of this genre, and I’ve even championed a few that were generally seen as “terrible” by most people. Does that mean I’m biased towards them? Possibly. You’ll need to continue reading to find out for sure…

Before I sign off, I want to “get real” for a minute. When I review the films on this list, I will be totally honest about them. I might love them, I may hate them, I may be indifferent to them. But I will always go into my reasons for my feelings on them. Hopefully you’ll enjoy coming on my emotional rollercoaster with me, but I do acknowledge that some of you might disagree with my review. And that’s fine by me! Seriously, you can agree or disagree with me, you can send platitudes or constructive criticism my way and I’ll happily accept them all. Unless I state otherwise in my review (such as any massively nostalgic films that may or may not be on the list), I am more than willing to update my reviews down the line if I hear a compelling enough argument. So please feel free to send in your comments, your thoughts and your concerns. It’s the best way to help us grow, help us learn and help us know you’re enjoying our words. Plus it’s always fun to carry on the discussion!

Anyway, that’s it from me for now. I have to go now, my planet needs me.

Actually, it doesn’t. I just always wanted to say that. So, in the immortal words of Kevin McCallister:

You guys give up, or are you thirsty for more?
