Update and a couple upcoming Superhero Shorts

I’m sure you’ve noticed the lack of regular posts lately. It’s a combination of a lot of things. It started due to being down by the lack of growth with the site lately, but it turned out that it was really more about writing burnout. It has actually been much nicer for me to be able to spend less time working on this site. On top of that, there’s a lot of real life stress. I’m moving at the end of this month, and it’s been fairly hectic trying to get things prepared, packing, and some things are still a little uncertain, so I imagine the schedule will remain much more sparse through the entire month of September, and possibly on into October a little bit. I’ve also been rather slow in posting the Facebook minimalist posters, and I’ll probably remain somewhat slow on those too.

Goodbye City of Heroes

One of the things it says right in my profile is “City of Heroes player”, and even though I haven’t played much at all since starting this site, I still keep an eye on what’s going on over at the City of Heroes forums, and I still have quite a few CoH players following me on Twitter. One of the reasons why I originally bought the game about five years ago was because I wanted to get a game that my wife and I could enjoy together. At the time, she was addicted to Sims, and spent most of her time in the create-a-sim rather than actually playing the game. I knew that City of Heroes boasted the most elaborate character creator of pretty much any game out there next to Sims, and it was superhero related, which I knew I would enjoy. It didn’t take too long for her to get bored with the character creator, but I ended up getting hooked on the actual game. I had specifically avoided MMOs up until that point because I had a feeling that I would end up spending too much time playing it, becoming one of those WoW addicts spending all their free time playing the game. It did end up happening for a while there, but I’m not here to talk about that.

Yep, it’s just a blog post folks

Yes, it’s come to this. I had a feeling it would happen sooner or later, but I figured it would end up happening later. First off, I have to mention that I still enjoy every part of this site and I’m not giving it up by a long shot. But I do have to say that I’m kind of down about it for various reasons and will be slowing down for a little bit. Instead of posting every day, I’ll be posting about every other day or so.

Guest blogger: Is Spock a Superhero?

Welcome to the first guest post here at Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights. When I started this site, it was my idea to have it be a personal challenge to seek out, watch, and review superhero movies. And my overall goal was, and still is, to watch and review every superhero movie ever made. But this site has been growing and expanding as I keep getting new ideas and inspirations. I’m now on a daily schedule, and to help me meet that schedule, I could use a little bit of help. The first person that stepped in was Alan from The Great Movie Project. If you’d like to participate too, I’m accepting any “almost super” movie reviews for sci-fi/fantasy movies that aren’t quite superhero movies, but still have that heroic/comic book quality to them. I’m also accepting “second opinion” reviews, if you have a different viewpoint on a superhero movie that I’ve already reviewed. And finally, I’m accepting blog style articles like this one that takes a more general look at the superhero genre without being about one single movie. Today, Alan is looking at how Star Trek, and more specifically Spock relates to superheroes in cinema. And I’ll be back tomorrow (hopefully) finishing up my bad movie mini-marathon with Superhero Movie.

Bad Planet, and it’s been a good week

First off, I’d just like to say that in general, it’s been a really great week for me. There’s been a lot of good stuff coming my way and I really appreciate all of it. One of the biggest surprises came when I actually managed to reach the biggest name I’ve ever tried for with this site. If you follow me on Twitter, you know who it is, for everyone else I will reveal it farther down this post. On top of that, I got tagged with a couple blog awards that have been making there way around this neck of the blogosphere. Thanks very much Cinematic Katzenjammer and Two Tickets For… for passing on the Liebster Award to me.

My Movie Confessions

Before I get to my confessional post, I’d like to mention that I’m in the process of putting together a podcast. I will do my best to bring the superhero love when and where I can, but I thought it would be easiest to round up some other movie bloggers to have a general movie podcast. As of right now, it seems to be between me, Nick over at Cinematic Katzenjammer, Joe over at Two Dude Review, and Vern over at The Vern’s Videovangaurd, with a couple others possibly joining up. We’re all fairly new to the podcasting game, so we’re taking it slow. I hope to have the first episode up by the middle of August and will be trying for a new episode every two weeks at first. As for today’s post, I’ve had a few ideas rolling around in my head, I know I want to do a post about the actors who double dip in the superhero pool, but I haven’t done the planning needed for that one yet. In the end, I took the easy way out and joined a fun little blogathon headed up by Nostra of My Film Views called Movie Confessions. I figured that I ask so many questions of others, it’s time to answer a few myself.

Are reboots of comic book movies more forgivable?

Before I get into today’s topic, I want to give a quick shoutout to At the Back who passed me the Versatile Blogger Award. I really do appreciate the award for what it is, he thinks this site is in his top 10 list of blogs. But I’m not going to participate in the meme. If you follow me on Twitter, you did get to hear 10 random facts about me, but that’s as far as I’m going with it. I’ll stick with my Follow Fridays to share the blogging love. But today I wanted to go back to The Amazing Spider-Man. It’s a great movie, did well in the box office, though not quite as well as any of the Raimi movies yet, and was received rather well critically. But the thing hanging in the air in almost every single discussion about the movie was that it was too soon for a reboot. So my question for today is, should we be more forgiving of reboots of comic book movies?

What’s your favorite Superhero Movie?

This weekly blog has become the toughest part about writing for this site, but since it’s halfway through the first year I thought it’s a good time to start tackling the toughest question that I ask everyone that I talk to for this site, “What’s your favorite Superhero movie?” I’ve done 23 different interviews, gotten 25 different people to answer this question, and gotten 25 different movies for an answer. Of course, that includes 2 people that didn’t pick a single movie, and almost half of them couldn’t pick just one movie. One person even went so far as to make a top 10 list. I counted every movie that was listed as a favorite, but I didn’t count any movies that were listed, but then discounted in favor of a different favorite movie. So what movies did everyone pick? Read on to find out.

Superhero Shorts: Three to look out for

Welcome to an atypical edition of Superhero Shorts, once again I was shorthanded on getting a new interview, so instead I thought of a better idea. Instead of talking about a fan-film that’s already been finished, I thought I’d take a quick look at three projects I found on Kickstarter that are trying to get enough funding to be made. I didn’t get a chance to talk to any of the project founders as this was a fairly last-minute idea, but they all look pretty interesting and I think they’re worth it. So if you’re looking to help bring new superhero fan-films to light, then look no further.

I’m expanding my borders

I think I’ve been going a little overboard lately, but it’s all good for now. I’ve recently started contributing over at the Lamb by doing a weekly game and I’m also working on another weekly feature over there. Not only that, but if you haven’t noticed yet, I’ve got a lovely new icon up at the top of the page with an F on it. Click it or click here for this site’s Facebook page. Be sure to “like” it and I’ll also be doing a near-daily game/discussion over there featuring some great minimalist movie posters. Basically I’ll be looking online for minimalist posters that catch my eye but might not be the easiest to recognize what movie they are for, so I’ll blank out the title and see if you can figure it out. I might toss in some real easy ones that I just think look good, so be sure and tell me what you think of the poster too, instead of just guessing the movie.
